Proud To Be Canadian was started by a small, grass-roots group
of concerned citizens who felt it was necessary to show they valued
Canada. "We wanted to be able to look our children in the eyes in
twenty years and say we cared enough about Canada to focus on the positive at a
time when our future seemed bleak. Our committee's aim was to
motivate young Canadians to reflect on what is important to them and why they
are proud of their country."
Canadian citizens are rarely given the
opportunity to pledge themselves to their country. The Proud
to be Canadian committee's first project therefore was to offer a
chance to Canadian youth to make their own pledge at a Rally
held on Parliament Hill. Out of that first effort grew the "Pledge
to Canada Program". Unlike a standard oath, this was to be in the
form of art, music, poetry, stories - whatever would best express each
individual's feelings. Schools across
the country became involved and thousands of students submitted their
"pledges" in the form of written contributions, artwork, music
and crafts. Out of all those, approximately 125 representative
entries were chosen by our panel of judges to be published here for others to see. Use
the links on the left side of this page to see what the school
children from across our vast country have submitted. While
you do we hope you will take this opportunity to think about what Canada means to
you. [ Home ] [ The Pledge to Canada Program ] [ The Rally on Parliament Hill ] [ History ]
