On Being Canadian
Am I Canadian? (Suis-je canadienne?)

Look.
See the easy confidence of my tread?
The echo of freedom, born and bred,
Sounding in each footstep that I take
Through peace and prosperity.

See the breadth of my shoulders?
Held erect by my pride
They keep time with my stride.

See the curve of my lips?
As I walk through this world
I smile at the strangers I pass
And they smile back at me.

See the clearness of my eyes?
As I look to the future
They reflect the hope and optimism
Such a country has offered me.

Am I a Canadian?
You tell me.

Being Canadian

Being Canadian is:

Worrying about taxes
Being actually able to find other countries on the map
Spelling words with our own distinctive flavour
Appreciating the finer points of Curling
Being able to sew our flag onto our belongings with pride
Being equal, but different
Understanding what "hoser" really means
Knowing what the heck a Timbit is

Trying to make peace, not war
Eating Beaver Tails, mmmmm…
Sitting through traffic jams that have no cause at all
Living in a culturally diverse society
Getting a French instruction manual for something that's completely in English
Being yourself, no matter what anybody tells you
Knowing the true colour of money
Wearing a toque with style

Being Canadian and damn proud of it
